Did you get a good nights sleep last night?  Are you going to bed a little earlier during your cleanse.  It can be hard when the weekend is associated with more socialising!

Weight gain and insulin resistance (IR) have been found to be causally related to disrupted sleep. One week of lost sleep can seriously affect blood sugar levels. This is one reason why there is a link between insomnia and increased risk of insulin resistance in post menopausal females.

Numerous studies have looked at the link between sleep and weight. Overall, the results show that if we get less sleep than we need, our weight tends to increase

A recent clinical trial showed that when people were sleep-deprived:

  • they ate significantly more calories.
  • they had a preference for fatty foods.
  • their energy expenditure did not change

Participants ate, on average, 300 extra calories per day when sleep-deprived and most of this extra intake was accounted for by fats.

However, stress(ors) is also a BIG PLAYER in the ability to shed stubborn fat

Poor stress management leads to an increase in our stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for regulating how much sugar (glucose) and fat gets stored in your body, and how much is released to use for fuel. It’s also your body’s main stress hormone. Your body makes and uses cortisol every day, throughout the day and night (a trigger that may affect your sleep)

When you’re stressed, your adrenal glands release a burst of cortisol to help you cope, temporarily increasing your blood sugar for a boost of energy. When cortisol is chronically elevated due to poor stress management, it can decrease the effects of lipolysis, or burning fat. Not to mention, high cortisol levels mask fat loss. This is due to your body retaining more water from the inflammatory response that chronic high cortisol can cause.

In addition, cortisol also:

  •     Controls blood sugar levels in the body
  •     Regulates metabolism
  •     Serves as an anti-inflammatory
  •     Contributes to memory formation
  •     Regulates the body’s salt and water balance
  •     Affects blood pressure
